  18. <p>     Soviet defector Oleg Gordievsky's KGB: The Inside Story,
  19. which was published last month and excerpted in TIME, has
  20. claimed a high-ranking victim. Latvia's Deputy Foreign Minister
  21. N.V. Neyland quietly resigned; the book charges that he was a
  22. Swedish-speaking KGB agent assigned to recruit Sweden's Prime
  23. Minister Olaf Palme. Neyland came from the same hometown as
  24. Palme's mother and apparently used his acquaintance with her to
  25. work his way toward the P.M. After gaining access to Palme,
  26. Neyland persuaded the KGB that he was responsible for some of
  27. the pro-Soviet views held by the Prime Minister, who was
  28. assassinated in 1986.
